SBR Technologies participates in an innovative technology review and public outreach activities for the Assembled Chemical Weapons Assessment Program

Challenge

Due to the increasing public concern over incineration, Congress mandated a new program to assess possible alternatives to incineration for the disposal of assembled chemical weapons (with explosive components) called the Assembled Chemical Weapons (ACWA) Program.

The Department of Defense and other interested parties have stated the need to integrate the input of various organizations in the ACWA program. In 1997, SBRT was contracted to provide technical expertise and public outreach for the ACWA program.

SBR Technologies Solution

Specifically, SBRT was asked to review and evaluate technical proposals and alternative technologies. Responsibilities also included assisting ACWA participants in communicating extremely technical issues to the broader public, and coordinating the Department of Defense and National Research Council efforts for ACWA citizen participants.

Benefits Achieved

SBRT helped to successfully select several viable alternative technologies for the disposal of chemical weapons and were successful in keeping the public involved in the process and appropriately informed throughout the project. SBRT was an important part of the overwhelming success of this program.

Also, in this role of technology review and public outreach, SBRT has gained extensive experience in several innovative technologies, including: supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) using a transpiring wall, electrochemical oxidation with silver II ions, gas phase chemical reduction, plasma arc technology, and solvated electron technology. This project has also helped SBRT increase its employees’ ability to translate complicated technical information into simple concepts and ideas for the general public.
