In August 2000, a two Phase study was initiated by SBR Technologies,
Inc. at the Southeast Berrien County Landfill (SEBCL). The SEBCL was experiencing reactor
failures due to high COD and ammonia levels and the lack of diagnostic abilities.
Phase I activities focused on gathering the necessary facility specific
information and providing essential personnel training to get the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) plant operating reliably.
The main objectives for Phase I included:
- Assist SEBCL in identifying the necessary equipment required for a new on site analytical laboratory
- Determine the nitrifying capability of sludge from the full-scale SBR
- Operate a laboratory scale SBR in the newly constructed SEBCL laboratory to obtain historical performance data
- Conduct a detailed facility inspection
- Provide SEBCL personnel with SBR operating skills using the laboratory reactor as a tool
The Phase II study began in March 2002 and is still ongoing. The main objectives of this
project include:
- Review existing data
- Gather additional data as needed
- Recommend operational changes to correct SBR issues
- Establish a bench scale system
- Conduct a capacity review
- Conduct training seminars for SEBCL personnel
- Complete a sensor and monitor calibration and upgrade
- Assist SEBCL in environmental safety and health upgrades
- Provide on-going on-call support
This project is currently in progress.
