SBR Technologies conducts treatability studies and creates operating strategies that result in the successful biologically treatment of herbicide wastewaters. Challenge SBR Technologies, Inc. (SBRT) was contracted to conduct screening treatability studies on selected out-of-wells wastewaters from a large chemical plant. Prior to the treatability studies, Monsanto had been incinerating concentrated waste streams containing glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide RoundupTM. The goal of the project was to develop effective operating strategies that would optimize the removal of glyphosate. SBR Technologies Solution The treatability studies were directed at determining the potential for removing hazardous organics, particularly acrylonitrile, and organic nitrogen in the Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR). Through an aggressive bench-scale testing program, SBRT was able to demonstrate that glyphosate degrading activity could be successfully maintained in an SBR, while achieving complete nitrification and excellent settling characteristics of the biomass. Benefits Achieved The client benefited from the study and operating strategies in the following ways:
