SBR Technologies evaluates and redesigns a poorly working SBR installed at a wastewater treatment facility, resulting in a fully operational facility with extremely high quality effluents. Challenge The town of Topeka, Indiana initiated start-up of its new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in December 1998. The 0.3 MGD plant was designed to operate as a two-tank periodically operated activated sludge treatment system. Although this type of Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology has been used successfully by thousands of municipalities as their preferred wastewater treatment method, this particular facility experienced a variety of difficulties in its first year of operation. This limited performance resulted in Topeka being unable to comply with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit effluent limits. At the time of noncompliance, SBR Technologies, Inc, developer of the SBR itself was first contracted to assess the problems and remedy them. SBR Technologies Solution To begin assessing the issues, SBRT began by evaluating key areas that would impact the SBR's performance, including:
Benefits Achieved The retrofitted wastewater treatment facility is now fully operational and producing a high quality effluent in compliance with its NPDES permit. SBR Technologies, Inc. continues to support its client by providing additional operator training, guidance and follow-on services as needed. |
